How a Sydney Jewellery Retailer Grew Google Clicks 4.6x and Kept Growing After Ads Were Switched Off

A Sydney fine jewellery retailer, outgunned on links and reviews, switched from chasing competitive head terms to building topical authority, with generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) built into the content. Monthly Google clicks grew 4.6x, top-10 keywords rose from 38 to 372, the brand earned 41.2K impressions in Google's AI answers, and organic search carried the business after Google Ads were paused.

Two-Year Organic Growth (Ahrefs)

Ahrefs organic traffic chart for an anonymised Sydney jewellery retailer showing estimated organic traffic rising from about 100 in September 2024 to about 300 in September 2026, peaking near 470 in mid-2026.

Ahrefs tracks the full engagement independently. Estimated organic traffic rose from about 100 a month in September 2024, weeks after the work began, to around 300 by September 2026, peaking near 470 in mid-2026.

41.2K Impressions in Google's AI Answers

Google Search Console Generative AI features report for an anonymised Sydney jewellery retailer showing 41,200 impressions in Google's AI answers over the last three months.

In the last three months, the site earned 41.2K impressions in Google's AI answers, averaging about 450 a day. When Search Console began reporting AI features in May 2026, the daily average was around 280. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) drove this: buying guides written to answer shoppers' questions directly, in a format Google's AI can quote.

1,870 Direction Requests, 496 Calls

Google Business Profile totals for an anonymised Sydney jewellery retailer: 1,870 direction requests, 496 call clicks, and 1,052 website clicks.

Between January 2025 and September 2026, the Google Business Profile generated 1,870 direction requests, 1,052 website clicks, and 496 calls: real customers heading to the store, including through its relocation.

AI Assistant Referrals Growing

Monthly sessions from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini for an anonymised Sydney jewellery retailer, rising from 1 to 3 a month in late 2025 to about 20 a month by mid-2026.

A new channel is opening up. Visits from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini grew from 1 to 3 sessions a month in late 2025 to around 20 a month by mid-2026, as generative engine optimisation (GEO) made the brand a source these assistants recommend.

Three Google Milestones in One Month

Google Search Console achievement badges for an anonymised Sydney jewellery retailer: 300 clicks in 28 days on 26 October 2025, 350 on 14 May 2026, then 400, 450, and 500 clicks in 28 days in July 2026.

Google's own milestones show the momentum. The site passed 300 clicks in 28 days in October 2025 and 350 in May 2026, then hit 400, 450, and 500 in a single month, July 2026, after active work had wound down.

01

Challenge

The client is a fine jewellery retailer in Sydney's CBD, specialising in Australian gemstones, with a limited organic search presence. I began working with the retailer in August 2024. A month later, Ahrefs estimated its organic traffic at around 100 visits a month, and by January 2025, the earliest month in our Search Console reporting, the site was earning around 130 clicks a month from Google.

The obvious route was to rank for the big commercial searches, and on paper that route was closed. The site had around 116 backlinks, 26 reviews, and a Domain Authority of 17. The leading specialist competitor had more than 16,000 backlinks and around 800 reviews. The client's core commercial pages were stuck between positions 28 and 33, and matching that competitor's authority through links alone would have taken years and an unrealistic budget.

Two changes during the engagement raised the stakes further. The store relocated to a new CBD address, and Google Ads were paused in mid-December 2025. From that point, organic search had to carry far more of the business.

02

Solution

I stopped chasing head terms and built the strategy around topical authority. Instead of competing on raw link count, the site set out to become the most useful source on its specialist gemstones. A research-led content cluster answered the questions buyers ask before they purchase, from value and quality to care and buying guidance.

Every piece of content had a commercial job. An internal linking architecture routed authority from the educational content into a small set of priority collection and service pages, so informational rankings translated into commercial visibility rather than standing alone.

On the store itself, I ran on-page and collection page optimisation, e-commerce image optimisation, and SERP click-through rate improvements on pages already earning impressions. Technical SEO work resolved structured data errors flagged in Search Console and consolidated ranking signals across the site.

Authority was built selectively rather than at volume. A link acquisition programme earned placements on relevant lifestyle and wedding publications. Local SEO managed the store relocation across Google Business Profile, citations, and on-site location signals, protecting local visibility through the move.

Finally, the strategy was built for AI search from the start, through generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO). AEO shaped the educational content around the precise questions buyers ask, with direct, answer-first sections and clear structure that Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode can quote. GEO focused on how AI assistants choose which brands to recommend: a consistent brand entity, expert product knowledge, and recommendation-style content and third-party mentions, so the retailer appears when shoppers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini where to buy, not only when they search Google.

Result

Monthly Google clicks grew from around 130 in January 2025 to 600 in August 2026, a 4.6x increase. Monthly impressions grew 3.6x over the same period, from 19.2K to 69.6K. In the first eight months of 2026, the site had already earned more clicks than in the whole of 2025, even without counting April.

Rankings broadened sharply. In the 28 days to early June 2026, 372 of the site's search queries ranked in the top ten, compared with 38 in the same period a year earlier: almost ten times as many. A priority service page improved from an average position of around 30 to around 15, with its main local search reaching page one.

The traffic turned into business. Organic sessions rose 164% year on year, from 208 in May 2025 to 550 in May 2026. With Google Ads paused from mid-December 2025, organic search generated 33% more key actions (enquiries, calls, directions clicks, and store visit clicks) between January and May 2026 than in the same months of 2025. Organic enquiry form submissions nearly doubled, from about four a month in late 2025 to almost eight a month in 2026, and May 2026 was the strongest month since tracking began. Offline demand showed up too: between January 2025 and September 2026, the Google Business Profile generated 1,870 direction requests, 1,052 website clicks, and 496 calls, with customers continuing to find the store through its relocation.

The GEO and AEO work made the brand visible in AI search too. In the last three months, the site earned 41.2K impressions in Google's AI answers, averaging about 450 a day, up from around 280 a day when Search Console began reporting. Visits from AI assistants such as ChatGPT grew from one to three a month to around 20. The same answer-first content that ranks in Google is now being quoted and recommended by AI engines.

The results also held up once active work ended. Monthly clicks rose from 215 in March 2026 to 600 in August, with most of that growth arriving after the engagement wound down in May. Search Console's own milestones confirm it: the site passed 400, 450, and 500 clicks in 28 days within July 2026 alone. That is the value of building authority rather than renting attention: a paused ad budget stops delivering, but earned rankings keep compounding.
