01

Challenge

The client is a Sri Lankan digital wedding invitation platform. Couples design an animated invitation online, share it with guests as a link, and manage their RSVPs, replacing or complementing the traditional printed card.

It was a brand-new product on a brand-new domain, in a category that was new to Sri Lanka. That created two problems. First, the market was still learning to search for it: many couples were still looking for traditional wedding invitation cards, not digital ones. Second, the opportunity did not stay empty for long. Several new platforms launched into the same space, each competing for the same small set of category searches.

The engagement was also short. The client needed a foundation their own team could build on, delivered within about one month.

02

Solution

Rather than a long retainer, this was a focused, one-month SEO strategy engagement designed to give the team a foundation they could scale themselves.

It started with ideal customer profile (ICP) research. I defined who actually chooses a wedding invitation: couples planning their wedding, the families who often share the decision, and couples inviting guests who live overseas. Each group has different questions, doubts, and reasons to switch from printed cards, so each needed a different message.

Keyword and market research mapped how Sri Lankan couples search for invitations, including both the new digital searches and the traditional card and design searches the category was replacing. That allowed the site to meet couples wherever they were in their thinking, not only those already searching for a digital product.

Because the category was new, awareness had to come before conversion. I mapped the product's unique selling points (USPs) across the full funnel. Top-of-funnel pages built awareness by explaining what a digital wedding invitation is and why it can work better than a printed card. Middle-of-funnel pages helped couples compare options and understand the practical benefits, from convenience and cost to how easily an invitation reaches guests abroad. Bottom-of-funnel landing pages led with the clearest USPs and a simple path to get started. USP optimisation made sure every stage answered the one question each audience was really asking: why this, and why now?

I then planned the information architecture and URL structure so the site could grow cleanly, with dedicated landing pages for the most valuable intents. On-page optimisation aligned titles, headings, and content with those searches, and a round of one-time technical SEO fixes gave the new domain a clean, crawlable foundation from the start.

The foundation also included a generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) plan, structuring the product and its answers to common questions so AI assistants could understand and recommend it.

Finally, I handed over an expansion strategy: a clear plan for the team to keep growing the site's coverage themselves after the engagement ended.

03

Result

The foundation worked quickly and kept compounding. Around the start of the engagement in mid-June 2026, the site was earning about 5 clicks a day from Google. By September, it was earning 30 to 55, and Search Console marked five milestones in two months, from 600 clicks in 28 days in July to 1K on 21 September. Over six months, it recorded 2.9K clicks and 26.2K impressions, with an 11.1% click-through rate and an average position of 5.3.

In a category with several competing platforms, the site now ranks #1 in Sri Lanka for both "online wedding invitation" and "digital wedding invitation sri lanka", and it appears for traditional searches such as wedding invitation cards and wedding card designs too.

Over the last 90 days, organic search sessions grew 612% to 5.4K. AI search grew even faster: the site earned 2.21K impressions in Google's AI answers in three months, and sessions from AI assistants grew 928% to 329.

The product itself has taken off. In September 2026, Google Analytics recorded 16K active users and 154K views, with users in countries with large Sri Lankan communities, including the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, and Italy. Direct traffic grew fastest of all, most likely from invitations being shared with guests and from the client's own marketing. Search helps bring couples to the product, and each invitation they share can bring many more people to it.

All of this came from one month of foundational work. The growth after the engagement ended came from the team executing the expansion plan, which is exactly what the strategy was built for.
