How a Sri Lankan Tea Exporter Turned Organic Search Into a Steady Flow of B2B Enquiries

A Sri Lankan Ceylon tea exporter and private label manufacturer needed overseas trade buyers, not traffic. B2B-focused SEO with generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) brought its first wholesale enquiry from the US market, then a steady flow of B2B enquiries from export markets, with buyers already moving into sampling and quotation. The site now ranks #1 in the US for "ceylon tea private label manufacturer", Google clicks grew 67%, and the brand earned 12.1K impressions in Google's AI answers.

01

Challenge

The client is a Sri Lankan Ceylon tea exporter and private label manufacturer, supplying tea to trade partners overseas.

In B2B export, traffic is not the goal. The people who matter are importers, distributors, wholesalers, and brands looking for a private label partner. They search in small numbers, using specific trade terms, but a single one of them can be worth more than thousands of casual visitors. Success means being found by the right buyer at the moment they are sourcing a supplier.

Before the engagement began in November 2025, the site had almost no organic visibility in its target markets. Semrush estimated its organic traffic at close to zero. The business needed search to bring buyers to it, instead of relying on outreach alone.

02

Solution

The work started with an ideal customer profile (ICP) analysis. Before choosing a single keyword, I defined who the exporter actually wanted to reach: importers, distributors, wholesalers, and brands looking for a private label or OEM manufacturing partner, and the markets they operate in. B2B keyword and market research then mapped how each of those buyers searches. Rather than chasing high-volume consumer tea searches, the focus was on buyer-intent terms such as wholesale, bulk, export, private label, and OEM, with a priority on overseas markets such as the United States.

The site architecture and internal linking were restructured around those buyer journeys, so every commercial service had a clear, dedicated page and authority flowed from supporting content into the pages that generate enquiries.

That research also shaped a full-funnel content strategy and content marketing programme built around how B2B buyers actually decide. Top-of-funnel (TOFU) content earned visibility with buyers researching Ceylon tea, grades, and origins. Middle-of-funnel (MOFU) content helped them compare suppliers and understand how private label and bulk sourcing work. Bottom-of-funnel (BOFU) pages, including dedicated wholesale and private label pages, were optimised for buyers ready to source, and internal linking moved readers down the funnel towards them. International SEO targeting helped those pages reach buyers in the right overseas markets, not only in Sri Lanka.

Trust matters in B2B sourcing, so the content made the exporter's credentials, experience, and manufacturing capability easy to find and verify, strengthening E-E-A-T signals for buyers and search engines alike. Local SEO and Google Business Profile optimisation gave the business a verified, well-presented local presence, an important trust check for overseas buyers vetting a supplier. Technical SEO kept the site crawlable, fast, and cleanly indexed.

Authority was earned, not bought. The exporter already had a distinctive brand voice and a genuine story, so link building focused on authentic, relevant links from real publications and industry sources that wanted to reference the brand, rather than spammy link schemes. That kind of authority is what both Google and AI engines trust.

Traffic only matters if it turns into conversations, so conversion rate optimisation focused on the enquiry journey. Clear calls to action and a short path from product information to enquiry made it easy for a buyer to reach out the moment they were ready.

The site was also optimised for AI search through generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO). AEO shaped key pages around the questions trade buyers ask when sourcing tea, with clear, answer-first sections AI engines can quote. GEO established the brand as a clear, credible entity, so AI assistants cite the exporter when buyers ask where to source Ceylon tea or find a private label manufacturer.

03

Result

The first breakthrough arrived as a message from the client: the very first enquiry through the wholesale page, from a B2B buyer in the US market. The business was not chasing that conversation. The buyer found them through organic search.

It did not stay a one-off. Organic search now brings the exporter a steady flow of B2B enquiries. When I checked in after a month with 502 clicks from Google, the client's answer was simple: "We got a lot of inquiries," with some buyers already routed to the sampling and quotation stage. For an exporter, that is the pipeline that matters: trade buyers actively evaluating the product, not just visitors. The enquiries come from a mix of export markets, including the United States, India, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia, where active users grew 51%, 137%, 35%, and 32% respectively.

The enquiries follow the rankings that matter most. In the United States, the site now ranks #1 for "ceylon tea private label manufacturer" and #3 for "ceylon tea oem manufacturer", the searches a brand makes when it is ready to find a manufacturing partner.

The visibility behind those enquiries kept building. Comparing the last six months with the previous six, Google clicks rose 67%, from 1.95K to 3.25K, impressions rose 83%, from 52.5K to 95.9K, and average position improved from 9.1 to 7.6. Search Console marked four milestones in five weeks, passing 500 clicks in 28 days on 2 August 2026 and 800 by 6 September. Semrush's estimate of organic traffic grew from almost nothing before the engagement to 488 a month, with ranking keywords up 34% in its latest reading.

Organic search is now the site's largest channel. In Google Analytics, organic sessions rose 167% against the previous period and overtook direct traffic. In September 2026, active users were up 75.8% and views up 81.7%, with the site performing above the peer median for food production businesses.

The GEO and AEO work opened a new channel as well. Since Search Console began reporting AI features in May 2026, the site has earned 12.1K impressions in Google's AI answers, with daily impressions rising from around 20 to 50 to as many as 230. AI assistants have already sent 279 sessions, and Semrush tracks 33 of the site's pages cited in AI search, 23 of them in Google AI Mode, with the client's own domain ranking as the top cited source for its tracked prompts. For an exporter, that means buyers now meet the brand whether they search Google or ask an AI assistant for a supplier.
