Five Google Milestones Between Phases

Google Search Console achievement badges for an anonymised Sri Lankan property portal: 2.2K clicks in 28 days on 18 February 2026, 2.5K on 5 March, 3K on 2 May, 3.5K on 23 May, and 4K on 7 June 2026.

Google's own milestones, earned between the two phases with no active work underway: 2.2K clicks in 28 days in February 2026, 2.5K in March, 3K and 3.5K in May, and 4K on 7 June. The phase one architecture kept compounding on its own.

01

Challenge

The client is a Sri Lankan property listings portal where owners and agents advertise houses, land, apartments, and commercial property for sale and rent across the island.

Property search is intensely local. People rarely search for "property in Sri Lanka". They search for a specific property type, in a specific town, to buy or to rent, such as a house for sale in one suburb or land for sale in a particular city. Multiplied across provinces, districts, cities, property types, and sale or rent, that adds up to thousands of distinct searches, each with its own small but high-intent audience.

The portal had the listings to serve that demand but not the structure to be found for it. Much of the site still ran on older, parameter-based URLs that search engines could not map cleanly to those location searches. When the engagement began in September 2025, the site was earning around 20 clicks a day from Google.

The work also had to succeed without link building. Authority would have to come from architecture, relevance, and technical quality rather than backlinks.

02

Solution

The engagement ran in two phases.

Phase one, from September to November 2025, built the programmatic SEO foundation. Keyword and market research mapped how Sri Lankans search for property by type, transaction, and location. I then designed a hierarchical location architecture, from province to district to city, combined with property type and sale or rent, so every meaningful search pattern had a dedicated, crawlable landing page. Clean, descriptive URLs replaced the legacy parameter-based structure, and templated titles, headings, and page content matched each page to its search intent. Internal linking connected every level of the location hierarchy, and XML sitemaps gave search engines a complete map of the route and listing pages. Phase two began in June 2026 and focused on protecting and recovering the gains. A Google core update in mid-2026 hit rankings, and on 10 July 2026 the site moved to a new hosting server. I provided technical SEO oversight and development consultation for the migration, covering pre-migration benchmarks, server and redirect configuration checks, and post-migration monitoring of crawling, indexing, and performance. Alongside it, core update recovery work reviewed the programmatic templates for quality and usefulness, so the pages would meet the bar Google's systems were now applying.

03

Result

Organic search grew from a trickle into a major acquisition channel. Daily Google clicks rose from around 22 in September 2025 to around 145 in June 2026, a 6.6x increase, and monthly clicks grew from 966 in October 2025 to 4,358 in June 2026. Over the full 12 months, the site earned 32.2K clicks and 1.26M impressions.

The programmatic pages did the heavy lifting. Location landing pages generated 54% of clicks and 67% of impressions among the site's top 1,000 pages, and around 95% of clicks came from non-branded searches: people looking for property, not for the portal by name.

The growth also compounded between phases. From December 2025 to May 2026, with no active work underway, daily clicks rose from around 41 to around 132 as Google indexed and ranked more of the new architecture. Search Console marked the climb with five milestones: 2.2K clicks in 28 days in February 2026, 2.5K in March, 3K and 3.5K in May, and 4K on 7 June. Comparing the last six months with the previous six, clicks grew 114%, from 10.2K to 21.9K, and impressions grew 2.3 times, from 376K to 879K.

The mid-2026 core update and hosting migration tested those gains. Daily clicks fell about 35% from the June peak to around 95 in August. With the recovery work in place, they climbed back to around 109 a day in September, and Semrush's latest reading shows estimated organic traffic up 42% and ranking keywords up 18%.

The site has also begun appearing in AI search. It has recorded 12.5K impressions in Google's AI answers, with daily impressions rising from around 80 to between 120 and 156 by late September, and Semrush tracks 12 of its pages cited in AI answers, 9 of them by ChatGPT. All of this was achieved without any link building.
